Weight Loss Diet Pills

Obesity is a major health problem for the US and most other western countries. With the overall change in diet to foods that can be prepared and eaten quickly, the relative increase of processed foods, and the decrease in exercise, weight gain in the populace is inevitable.

There are many ways to reduce weight, and diet pills, both pharmaceutical and those using natural products, are but one course that can be taken. Although diet pills may appear to be the quick way out, they are not necessarily the best way. In fact, prescription weight loss pills are often only available to those who have weight related health problems. The best way to lose weight is through regular exercise and a healthy and controlled eating plan. However, Diet Pills can be a useful tool to assist in the fight against obesity.

Are Diet Pills for You?

Prescription diet pills are a serious form of medication and should only be used under medical supervision. They are not for mild weight loss situations such as cosmetic reasons, but are usually only administered to patients with sever weight problems or who are unable to reduce and/or maintain a healthy weight through other more conventional courses of action.

In short, they should only be considered when other weight loss efforts have failed and you have a Body Mass Index of 27 or greater. Usually other complications of obesity such as blood pressure and diabetes are also considered.

Common weight-loss drugs

In short, there are two main types of diet pills available on the market:-

1. drugs that reduce food intake through appetite suppression, and
2. drugs that reduce the absorption of fat into the system regardless of food intake.

Other types of pills available include those that raise the metabolic rate thus burning up calories quicker, although these tends to be non-prescription.

Are Diet Pills Safe?

The answer to "Are there safe prescription diet pills?" is not as easy as Yes or No. Diet pills all have side effects, and so are not without risks. However, used with caution and under medical supervision they can be quite safe to use. Unsupervised usage though is not to be considered safe at all.

Usefulness

Diet Pills are only part of the solution, and to be as effective as possible should be used in combination with a calorie controlled diet and regular exercise. With all three in play it is possible to lose excess weight over a period of time, but care should always be taken not to lose weight too fast, and even losing a small amount of excess weight can have a significant affect on your overall health and well being.

However, taking diet pills does not mean you can neglect the need for exercise and healthy food, they should only be used as part of a combines weight loss plan.
